چکیده

Abstract This study investigates the flow physics on microvortex generators (MVGs) in order to improve their performance turbulent boundary layers (TBLs). TBLs can be a challenging environment for MVGs because of streamwise length generated vortex and increased parasitic drag MVGs. Large eddy simulation (LES) is used properly resolve layer flat-plate with zero-pressure gradient MVG vane. Three different vane-types are investigated (e423-Mod, triangular, rectangular vanes) studied single vane configuration. Important features such as separation bubble leading edge vanes which introduced unsteadiness into formation degraded MVG's efficiency was observed. The e423-Mod triangular were observed more aerodynamically efficient. found most efficient when evaluated immediately downstream However, from decayed very rapidly due it being formed close wall its further downstream. avoided this problem but high relative strength experienced brief period rapid decay decreasing efficiency. Further downstream, at 16 deg became through combination low TBL, demonstrating need consider range issues designing an MVG.

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Large-eddy simulation of separation and reattachment of a flat plate turbulent boundary layer

We present large-eddy simulations (LES) of separation and reattachment of a flat-plate turbulent boundary-layer flow. Instead of resolving the near wall region, we develop a two-dimensional virtual wall model which can calculate the timeand space-dependent skin-friction vector field at the wall, at the resolved scale. By combining the virtual-wall model with the stretched-vortex subgrid-scale (...

Wall modeled large-eddy simulation of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction with separation

The objective of this work is to assess the ability of large-eddy simulations employing an equilibrium wall model to reproduce the flow features present in strong interactions between an oblique shock wave and the turbulent boundary layers of an internal (duct) flow leading to mean flow separation. Such interactions (denoted STBLI) are pertinent, among other applications, to supersonic flight p...
